Avalon Update on Covid-19 Restrictions/Updated April 20 2020 Gubernatorial/Mayoral Executive Orders: New Jersey, the County of Cape May, and the Borough of Avalon have numerous executive orders in place that eliminate non-essential travel and strongly encourage “stay at home”.
The Avalon Police Department employs special police officers to assist with public safety duties during the summer months due to the influx of residents and tourists. There are two types of special officers: Class 1 and Class 2.All applicants must be:. (18) years of age. U.S. Citizen.
Possess a valid Driver’s License. High school diploma or equivalency certificateSpecial Class 1 Police OfficerA Class 1 Police officer is required to complete a Police Training Commission approved Class 1 Police Academy Class. There are two avenues to achieve this certification. The first is for students that attend the Cape May County Technical School. Students will achieve the required PTC certification upon completion of the course.
The second, prospective hires will attend the Cape May County Police Academy and attend a two week long course beginning in May. All recruits will be trained in handcuffing, defensive tactics, motor vehicle law, OC spray etc. The Avalon Police Department utilizes these officers for parking enforcement, ordinance enforcement, traffic control, and crowd control. Some may be assigned to the Marine unit.CLASS 1 Officers:. Must complete two week Police Academy (unless already certified). Will be trained in Use of force / Defensive Tactics / handcuffing / Arrests / Ethics /Traffic.

Enforce Traffic Law and Borough ordinancesSpecial Class 2 Police OfficerA Class 2 Police Officer is required to complete a Police Training Commission approved Class 2 Police Academy. There are two Academy classes in Cape May County. The winter academy class is a part time academy class. Class is held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights, from 3:00 pm through 10:00 pm., and every Saturday from 7:00 am through 7:00 pm from the beginning of December through the end of April.
The spring academy is held Monday through Saturday from 7:00 am through 5:00 pm, May through June.The Class 2 Police Academy recruits will be trained in physical fitness, criminal law, patrol concepts, firearms, vehicle operations, defensive tactics, handcuffing, OC spray, arrest search and seizure to name a few. They have similar powers to that of a full-time police officers.
